Sunny House Chinese Restaurant

Overview:

Campustown in Peoria, IL is known for having many options of food places that range from local restaurants to chains such as Subway and Pizza Hut. As you make your way through the strip of places to eat it, sitting almost right in the middle is “Sunny House Chinese Restaurant”. This place offers table and booth seating for any size party, and offers a very warm and welcoming ambiance to it. The menu consists of traditional Chinese food offerings, ranging from lo mein to chicken meals to even some pork dishes. They offer traditional sit down style of ordering as well, where a waiter or waitress will come to your table and then when you are finished, they will give a bill to pay at your table.

My Experience:

As church got out at noon on Palm Sunday, my girlfriend and I were trying to find someplace to eat, and we had no intentions of going far from campus and began to look at what was in the local area. As we were walking through the Bradley Campustown area, we stopped in front of one of the only places open in the area, and we both were absolutely craving some good Chinese food.

As we made our way into the restaurant, we were greeted so pleasantly by the lady who served our table and were immediately shown to where we would be eating at. The menu was fairly limited, but it had a good selection of foods in what it was limited to. We first started off with ordering waters and then we started with some crab rangoons to share for the both of us. I am a sucker for a good crab rangoon, and these were delicious! They did have a good amount of cream cheese in the middle of it, so if you are not a fan of cream cheese, I wouldn’t recommend getting this, but otherwise, it was very good. It even came with a side of sweet and sour sauce.

For the main entrees, I had ordered a plate of sweet and sour chicken and a side of white rice, while my girlfriend got beef lo mein as her dish. These plates were PACKED with food, the portions were unbelievably big. If you have read any of my previous posts, I reviewed Thanh Lihn, the Vietnamese restaurant in Campustown and I had mentioned how big the portion sizes were there. The ones here might even be as big, if not a little bigger than there. Neither of us got very far in our food because we were stuffed from how much there was. The food was very tasty though! The sweet and sour chicken was as expected, it didn’t taste like anything out of the ordinary, but it was exactly what it should have been and it was still very good. The beef lo mein, however, was very flavorful, and the beef was cooked very tenderly and if I had to go there again, I would probably order this instead. I was very delighted by how the food was.

If you are looking for a place that has good Chinese food and is still very affordable, I would highly recommend going to Sunny House.

Sunny House has been a favorite of mine going on 4 years now since we first arrived here as freshman. I’ve always enjoyed their massive portion sizes and specifically their orange chicken combo. I’m glad you had a good experience as well and I agree that the prices are great for the value.

  2. I used to get the lunch special at Sunny House back when I was a sophomore/junior and I would always get the orange chicken with rice. I remember though they raised their prices like many other places in the area so I haven’t been going as often but man you can’t beat those portion sizes. Always thought their hours were weird though too.

I’ve heard a lot of great things about this place but have never tried it out before. I do really like sweet and sour chicken so I’m going to have to try it out soon!

  4. I will definitely need to check this place out next time I am craving Chinese! Whenever I get Chinese food near campus I have always gone to Panda House, as it was just grab and go. However, I always felt sick after eating it so I would not recommend. I am glad to know that there is a better alternative near campus!

I’ve always struggled to find a good Chinese food place in the area. Chinese food is one of my favorite cuisines and I find myself craving it all the time. I’ll definitely check out Sunny House the next time I’m craving some orange chicken and crab rangoons!
