Tadoughs

Overview:

Have you ever heard of a potato doughnut? Neither have I, until today. Tadoughs, offering two locations in Pekin and Peoria, was previously known to many as ‘Spudnut Donuts’ combines a secret recipe with a not-so-secret recipe (potatoes) to make doughnuts and other bakery treats. The two locations offer different hours of operations: Pekin is open from 4:00am-10:00am Tuesday through Saturday, whereas the Peoria location is open from 5:00am-3:00pm Tuesday through Saturday.

In the Peoria location, they offer plenty of seating for those that want to relax with a sweet treat and also serve coffee and other various beverages to compliment them. They offer not just doughnuts, but other pastries such as cinnamon rolls, bear claws, and more. The price is also VERY cheap for the size of the item you get, with each one costing between $1.50-$2.50, and they are roughly the size of an average hand, maybe bigger. You also have the option of ordering them in large quantities for if you want to share with your friends and family.

My Experience:

This is a place my girlfriend has been raving about wanting to try, and we didn’t even realize they were potato doughnuts until recently. We just love doughnuts and wanted to try it. We went fairly close to the time they closed, but we were surprised at how many offerings were still available. The ladies at the counter were very nice to us and when we asked what they had available, they were very kind in showing us all of the different options. After they told us what was there, we decided on a glazed ring and a cinnamon roll.

We were NOT expecting these to be as fluffy as they were, especially the cinnamon roll, and they were SO GOOD! Outside of some home-cooked cinnamon rolls that I have had, this may have been the best cinnamon roll I have ever had. It was so soft and it was packed with a lot of cinnamon flavor, which is what I love about a good cinnamon roll. The glazed doughnut was also very good, and reminded me a lot of a Krispy Kreme doughnut, but even softer than that and much bigger (and cheaper). I cannot stop raving about how soft they were, and even a few hours after getting it they are still just as soft. If you would have told me this was made from potato, I would have thought you were nuts because it tasted exactly like a normal doughnut.

This is definitely a place I am going to revisit and maybe do some studying at so I can fully enjoy the ambiance of the place. I cannot wait to try some new flavors, and this is an automatic yes from me. I highly recommend this place.

Tadoughs is definitely a local gem. The Pekin location used to sell out just hours after they opened each day. You had to be quick if you wanted donuts from them. I have not been to the Peoria location, but I am sure it is just as good. Next time you go, you have to get there early and get some of their classic frosted donuts and let us know how you like them!
