Whoever told you that Christian music is boring straight up lied to you. I would know because I used to think that way a lot. Growing up, I used to think it was cheesy, corny, and I felt as though there were so many just better non-Christian songs out there.
As I started to grow closer to Jesus though, I found this not to be the case. What I thought were songs that would make me cringe were actually tunes that I had found reach the deepest parts of my soul. There is a song on this list that I will mention when we get there as being the first song I had ever cried to. Not only do Christian songs make you emotional: they are also just genuinely good songs!
While I can agree that sometimes this genre of music can be very repetitive in the songs being put out, there are many great songs that await if you take the time to listen to them. If you let the Holy Spirit work through you, these songs will reach a part of you that no other song can, and you will experience a feeling of peace, love, and joy that is indescribable.
After much thought, here is my list of my top 10 favorite Christian/Worship songs. If you know of a song I didn’t put on this list, feel free to comment your favorites. If you have never heard of any of these and liked even just one of these songs, I would love to hear which one.
Let’s get started!
Number 10: Build my Life by Housefires
Coming in at number 10 is a song that I only begun to listen to fairly recently, but it was one that I found myself listening to on repeat for days on end. During my time at college, I developed a prayer routine that I saw online called a “Thirsty 30”, which involves 10 minutes of worshipping with music, 10 minutes of focused prayer, and 10 minutes of Scripture reading. Around the same time I started doing this prayer, I learned about this song and I would use it each and every time I did this prayer. This song is emotional, it’s deep, it’s powerful, it’s moving. It’s everything you could ask for in a worship song and more.
Key Lyrics:
“Holy, there is no one like you
There is none besides you
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who you are and fill me
With your heart and lead me
In your love to those around me”
Number 9: Altar by Hulvey and Forrest Frank
Number 9 is a song that I have been playing in my car with the windows even when the weather is cold. This song is one that both has a great beat and inspiring lyrics. The idea that we have so much to be shameful for, and all we have to do is bring them to the feet of Jesus and we can be washed clean is incredible. This song has a great message, a great beat, and both Hulvey and Forrest had some great verses in the song.
Key Lyrics:
“Glory to the Father
You deserve the praise
Lead me to Your altar
Wash away my shame”
Number 8: Word of God Speak by MercyMe
This song holds such a special place in my heart. As I mentioned in the introduction, there is a song on this list that was the first song I have ever cried to. Well here it is. This song takes me back to two of the hardest moments in my life, and they were also songs that helped me get closer to Jesus so that He can get me through those moments.
I’m sure many of us can relate to this song. The songs talks about how sometimes we just don’t have anything to say. We want to cry to God and tell Him everything that is wrong and just ramble on and on and ask questions about why things may seemingly be going bad. Yet sometimes, nothing comes out of our mouths. And that’s okay. This song serves as a reminder to listen to God’s voice and what He is trying to say to us, even when our eyes are full of tears.
Key Lyrics:
“Word of God speak
Would you pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your majesty
To be still and know
That you’re in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In your holiness
Word of God speak”
Number 7: Hills and Valleys (the Valleys version) by Tauren Wells
Number 7 on my list is actually a song that I haven’t listened to in a while, yet it’s so good that I had to put it on here. This song reached in the top 5 of my top listened to songs on Spotify in 2021. Tauren Wells has made a lot of great songs, yet this one, in my opinion, tops all of them. This song does a great job of talking about how when we feel absolutely defeated, when we feel like we are in the lowest of lows, and even the highest of highs, God will be there. He will always be there to lift us out, and I will praise Him through it all.
Key Lyrics:
“When I’m standing on the mountain, I didn’t get there on my own
When I’m walking through the valley I know I am not alone
You’re God of the hills and valleys”
Number 6: Gratitude by Brandon Lake
Brandon Lake is one of the most popular Christian artists today, and coming in at number 6 is his hit song “Gratitude”. I was first introduced to Brandon Lake back in 2020 when I heard his song “Just Like Heaven” on the radio. and I decided to look up his discography. It took me 3 years to actually listen to it, but when I finally did, I was blown away. The opening lines of the song saying “All my words fall short, I’ve got nothing new, how can I express all my gratitude” is a testament to how we all feel. Sometimes we don’t have the words to say in our prayer and nothing comes out. Sometimes we may not even feel worthy to speak and pray to God. All we can then do is throw up our hands and praise Him.
Key Lyrics:
“So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
‘Cause all that I have is a hallelujah
Hallelujah
And I know it’s not much
But I’ve nothing else fit for a King
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah”
Number 5: Yes I will by Vertical Worship
This song is one of those lighthearted songs that you can play in the car on a Spring day and just sing at the top of your lungs. The song “Yes I Will” by Vertical Worship is a song that brings pure joy to your heart. God has never failed, He won’t fail now, and He won’t fail ever. I highly recommend listening to this one ASAP.
Key Lyrics:
“I count on one thing
The same God that never fails
Will not fail me now
You won’t fail me now”
Number 4: God Is by Kanye West
I first heard this song on Tik Tok, and when I did, I had NO idea this was Kanye who made this song. When I listened to the whole thing, how could I not put it on here? The chorus inspiration to the song mixed with the Biblical lyrics makes this a song that listeners are sure to have stuck in their heads. His line saying “you won’t ever be the same, when you call on Jesus’ name” is one that I sing at the top of my lungs every single time.
Key Lyrics:
“Everything that hath breath, praise the Lord
Worship Christ with the best of your portions
I know I won’t forget all He’s done
He’s the strength in this race that I run”
Number 3: Good Day by Forrest Frank
This song was the one that truly introduced me to Forrest Frank, and the rest is history (I mentioned in my testimony post that I went to his concert in August 2024). If you are looking for a song to start your day off right, this is the one. There are so many things in this life to be thankful for, and no matter what you are going through, the sun will always shine through the darkness. God is so good that He makes me want to sing praises everywhere I go.
Key Lyrics:
“I’m ’bout to have a good day (good day)
In every single way
The God who made the universe
Knows me by my name
So it’s a good day”
Number 2: Hard Fought Hallelujah by Brandon Lake
I mentioned Brandon Lake earlier on this list with his song Gratitude, and when I heard that he was coming out with a new song back in November 2024, I didn’t think anything would top it. Boy was I wrong. This country rock style song is one of the most uplifting songs I have ever heard. This song speaks to anyone who listens to it, and I mean ANYONE. We have all been through something that has ripped us and torn us to shreds. If you’re reading this, then that means that you are still here. You have fought through those battles, and this is the perfect anthem for that. God has been with you and me and all of us in every battle, and when our “head, heart and hands are feeling heavy, that’s when we lift them just a little higher”.
Key Lyrics:
“‘Cause faith isn’t proven like gold
‘Til it’s been through the fire
Yeah, yeah
My head, heart and hands are feeling heavy
And that’s when I lift them just a little higher”
Number 1: River by Leon Bridges
Coming in at number 1 on my list is River by Leon Bridges. This mellow, blues song tug at my strings and almost made me cry the first time I listened to it. Leon Bridges wrote this song in his garage, and made it into a hit. I have no words to describe it other than you NEED to listen to it. This song talks about the idea, similar to Altar earlier on the list, of coming to God despite every single thing we have done. We may have done some seriously bad things in our lives. If you come to the Lord, He will “wipe your slate clean”. no matter what. This is the perfect song to fall asleep to, listen to on a night drive, or even if you need some peace and remembrance of how good the Lord is.
Key Lyrics:
“In my darkness I remember
Momma’s words reoccur to me
“Surrender to the good Lord
And he’ll wipe your slate clean””
