Key Verse: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB2020 Version)
Have you ever gone through something in your life where it seems like there is no end to it? You’ve been bruised and battered and shaken and you are just crawling to give every last ounce you of effort and energy you can, and it seems like there is no light at the end? Maybe you’re going through this now.
I know I have. I have certainly gone through moments in my life where this was the case. I have had struggles that lasted two weeks and some that lasted six months, where almost every night I was crying out in desperation to God for something to happen. I’ve experienced grief, mistrust, confusion, doubt, shame, all sorts of things in my life that have caused me to have so many questions in my life about why certain thing were happening to me.
Despite all of this, I knew I couldn’t give up. I wanted answers, and who better to go to with my questions than the One who created me?
I then started to go deeper to understand these, and the Holy Spirit led me to Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” At first, when I saw this, I had a feeling of confusion and frustration because the answer I was looking for was…no answer? After everything I was going through, this was my conclusion?
I had scoffed at this at first and was ready to throw in the towel, but I sat there and looked at my Bible a little longer, and thank goodness I did. After much discernment and prayer time, I had realized that I didn’t need an answer. I am not owed an answer, I am not called to receive an answer. I am called to trust. Over time, as I began to replay this verse in my head, this became so much more clear to me and I could begin to see Jesus transforming my heart and open up to receiving His plan for my life.

One other major thing that I learned in all of this was that God may not change your situation, but He will certainly change the way you handle the situation. The Brandon Lake song Hard Fought Hallelujah has the line “Faith isn’t proven like gold, till it’s been through the fire” and that could not be more true. Being a follower of Christ does not mean that you are free from hardships. However, it does mean that when you are put through the fire, you will come out like gold on the other end. You will be a new creation in Christ afterwards.
The next line of the song goes on to say “My head, heart, and hands are feeling heavy, that’s when I lift them just a little higher”. This is the importance of having faith and where Proverbs 3:5-6 comes into prominence. God has all the answers in life, and He knows the exact ways that our life has been mapped out. He has even gone a step further to say in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
The next time things start to get out of control in your life, take a deep breath and remember these words from God Himself. Close your eyes and just picture Him giving you the biggest hug ever, and know that you can rest easy in His presence.
